Yoga Beneficial for Diabetes

If you are diabetes, you might like join a yoga class.  

A new study published in Diabetes Care reported that gentle yoga classes may help people with type 2 diabetes to reduce weight and to improve their glycemic control. 

The study, involving 123 middle-aged and older diabetic patients, found that those who added yoga classes to standard diabetes care experienced a mild reduction in their body mass index (reduced by 0.4) in three months and was able to maintain their blood glucose level. 

The yoga used in this study, however, was a gentle form, and parts of the practice were adapted for people who had additional health problems.  For example, certain poses were avoided in people who had heart disease.

What should you do if you have Prostate Cancer?

You should check whether you are overweight or obese*.  If you have prostate cancer and are overweight, you should try to lower your weight immediately.  

A new study presented at the American Urological Association inWashington,DCfound that overweight and obese prostate cancer patients are more likely to have their cancer spread. 

Researchers atDukeUniversityfollowed 287 men who had their prostate gland after the cancer diagnosis for 6 years.  All these patients received androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) after the surgery, but their cancers recurred.

How to Prevent Atrial Fibrillation from Recurring?

Currently, there is no effective drug to treat atrial fibrillation (AF).  Even using the most potent drug, amiodarone, only 50% of the AF patients can have their sinus rhythm maintained for a year.  If you have been diagnosed with AF, how can you prevent atrial fibrillation from recurring? 

A reported published American Journal of Cardiology indicated that obese patients face an increased rate of AF recurrence and AF burden (as measured by the number of follow-up visits when patients were in AF). 

The investigators analyzed 2,500 AF patients in the AFFIRM trial to evaluate the relation of obesity (as determined by body-mass index, or BMI) to AF recurrence and AF burden.

How to Prevent Common Cancers?

The incidence and burden of cancer is huge.  Nearly 12.7 million of people are diagnosed of cancer every day and 7.6 million die from cancer.  The global cancer epidemic is set to continue rising, with the number of worldwide cancer cases expected to double over the next 20-40 years. 

A new report, published American Institute for Cancer Research (AICR) and the World Cancer Research Fund (WCF) by indicated that about a third of some of the most common forms of cancer could be prevented through healthy diet, physical fitness and limiting alcohol intake.  

The reported indicated that by adopting a healthy lifestyle, 38 percent of breast cancers, 47% of stomach cancers and 45% of colon cancer can be prevented.
